Dr Afif Bahardin (PN-Taman Medan) said he submitted the motion to the assembly secretary earlier this morning and urged speaker Lau Weng San to review the matter.
“This morning, I submitted a motion through the assembly secretary to refer the Seri Kembangan assemblyman to the rights and privileges committee,” he said in an interjection during the debate on the motion regarding the sultan of Selangor’s royal address.
However, Lau said he had yet to receive or examine the motion and was therefore unable to make an immediate ruling.
He also said that Afif could not invoke the standing orders to seize an opportunity for debate before the motion had been formally reviewed.
Tensions escalated when several assemblymen, including Hilman Idham (PN-Gombak Setia) and opposition leader Azmin Ali (PN-Hulu Kelang), repeatedly rose to interject, prompting the speaker to order them to sit down and refrain from disrupting proceedings.
“Please sit. This is not the time for debate. I’ve informed you that I will review it, and that is sufficient,” Lau said.
He also gave Afif a warning after the opposition assemblyman continued pressing for clarification on the motion’s status.
Yesterday, Wong, while debating the sultan’s address, said the issue of pig farming touched on the right to equality under Article 8(2) of the Federal Constitution.
She argued that pig farming should not be singled out from other forms of livestock farming, as the risks of pollution, hygiene concerns, and public health implications are similar across all types of farming.
Wong also expressed regret that the issue had, in her view, been politicised by various parties.
Selangor PAS Youth chief Sukri Omar yesterday called for Wong to be suspended from the state assembly for up to 12 months if her proposal for a modern, closed pig farming system was found to contradict a royal decree.
He said the proposal disrespected the monarchy, as the core issue was not the technology but the state ruler’s decree that there would be no more pig farming in Selangor.
