Gas pipeline fire clean-up operations enters day two

Clean-up efforts at the areas affected by the recent gas pipeline inferno continued for a second day today.

Various clean-up vehicles began entering Putra Heights and Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru in Subang Jaya as early as 9am, Bernama reported.

The focus was on 12 designated zones with the involvement of various local authorities, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other volunteers.

The authorities which have been helping out with the clean-up operation are the Sabak Bernam district council, Kuala Selangor municipal council, Petaling Jaya city council, Klang city council, Shah Alam city council, Hulu Selangor municipal council, Sepang municipal council, Kajang municipal council, Selayang municipal council and Kuala Langat municipal council.

The efforts were also supported by the national solid waste management department (JPSPN) and the armed forces.

According to Bernama, the agencies and other volunteers all helped to clear drains, road shoulders, back alleys and residential car porches.

The two-day Op Mega, which began yesterday, involves over 4,000 volunteers from more than 20 government agencies, private sector organisations, NGOs and individuals who want to help out.

So far, 307 homes have been cleared for reoccupation, with more expected to follow as the clean-up progresses.

The fire, which broke out on the morning of April 1 in Putra Heights, engulfed a 500m section of a gas pipeline.

A total of 399 vehicles were affected, with 225 burnt and 174 damaged. Some 538 residents from 120 families were also forced to seek shelter at two temporary relief centres.
