CYBERJAYA:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said today the Cabinet will determine Malaysia’s next course of action following the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory is illegal.

“We will review the proposals regarding the implications of this (advisory opinion),” he told reporters after launching the Jiwa Merdeka programme here today.

“At the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, we will make a final decision on the steps we will take to align with the ICJ’s opinion to condemn and take action against Israel.”

Anwar also affirmed that Malaysia supports ICJ’s opinion, saying that it is “based on clear facts regarding Israel’s ongoing violence and brutality”.

Last Friday, the UN’s top court declared Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and urged its immediate cessation.

The advisory opinion, while non-binding, highlights growing concerns over Israel’s conflict with Hamas and its policies, including settlement construction and territorial annexation.

The ICJ said Israel is “under an obligation to cease immediately all new settlement activities and to evacuate all settlers” from occupied land.

Additionally, a separate high-profile case brought by South Africa before the court alleges that Israel has committed genocidal acts during its Gaza offensive.

The ICJ held a week-long session in February to hear submissions from various countries following a request supported by most members of the UN’s General Assembly.

During the hearings, the majority of speakers urged Israel to end its 57-year occupation, warning that a prolonged occupation posed an “extreme danger” to stability in the Middle East and beyond.
