KUALA LUMPUR:
Former minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P Waytha Moorthy today issued a public apology to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim over a false statement he made at a media event yesterday.

In a statement on Facebook, Waytha admitted to wrongly claiming that Anwar had not extended the service of former chief justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat because of a ruling involving Anwar in the Court of Appeal.

After reviewing official judicial records this morning, Waytha confirmed that Tengku Maimun was never part of the panel in any of Anwar’s appeal cases.

“I take full responsibility and acknowledge that the statement was untrue and resulted from an honest mistake on my part,” he said.

“I sincerely apologise to Anwar for the factual error and for any misunderstanding or negative perception (towards him).”

Waytha also apologised to Tengku Maimun and others affected by the statement, and urged anyone who had recorded or shared the video to delete the relevant parts to curb the spread of inaccurate information.
