PUTRAJAYA:
Transport minister Loke Siew Fook said the ministry is rectifying the weaknesses found in services by MRT1 and MRT2, which have failed to meet the targets for passenger numbers, frequency of trains available during peak hours and the inventory of rolling stock.

“I have been addressing these matters from time to time.

“For Prasarana, we have put in place a key performance indicator  system in terms of ‘mean kilometre between failures’ to reduce breakdowns,” he said at a press conference.

He said this is to ensure that MRT and LRT services are more reliable.

According to Loke, passenger levels have increased this year, with Prasarana transporting one million passengers daily.

“We accommodate 800,000 passengers on trains and 200,000 on buses every day,” he said.

Earlier today, the 2024 auditor-general’s report said MRT1 and MRT2 had failed to meet their targets in terms of daily ridership, number of trains in operation and frequency during peak hours.

6 tour bus drivers fail drug tests

On another matter, Loke said as of yesterday, officials working on Ops Sepadu had checked 351 tour buses.

“Six drivers were detained for failing drug tests. In such cases, we immediately stop them from driving.

“The bus won’t be able to move until a replacement driver is found,” he said, adding that it is the bus company’s responsibility to do so.

On Monday, Loke announced a “major crackdown” on tour buses following a fatal crash in Genting Highlands, which claimed the lives of two Chinese tourists.

He said officials from his ministry would hold discussions with their tourism counterparts on how to improve enforcement SOPs when it comes to travel companies and tour buses.

New shipping policy

Meanwhile, Loke said a national shipping policy will be introduced to guide the local shipping sector in exports and imports, and create new job opportunities.

He said the proposal for this policy was raised during the meeting of the National Shipping and Port Council, which he chaired today.

He said the policy is aimed at encouraging the use of local ships and crew for cargo and freight services, especially in the fields of oil and gas, or major commodities.

“There will be detailed discussions with various stakeholders on this policy proposal. We hope to present it to the Cabinet by the end of this year.”
