PUTRAJAYA:
The Cabinet has agreed to set up a committee to resolve traffic congestion, said transport minister Loke Siew Fook.

Loke said the Cabinet committee, chaired by deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, would hold its first meeting in April. He added that this showed the seriousness of the government in addressing traffic congestion.

“This committee will consist of various ministries and will look into more comprehensive steps (to tackle traffic jams).

“Public transport will be given priority and we will continue to enhance and develop our public transport networks in order to alleviate traffic congestion,” he said at a press conference after the launch of the Putrajaya MRT line by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Earlier, Anwar said public transportation would be given utmost priority in the next annual federal budget, adding that Budget 2023 focused more on education and health.

The prime minister acknowledged that traffic jams affected people’s productivity.

The Putrajaya MRT line, the country’s second MRT line, will be fully opened at 3pm.

The MRT line and feeder buses to the train network will be free of charge until March 31.
