In a statement on its Facebook page, Air Selangor said that the four water treatment plants which had been temporarily shut down were now fully operational again.
They are the Rantau Panjang water treatment plant (WTP), Sungai Selangor Phase 1 WTP, Sungai Selangor Phase 2 WTP, and Sungai Selangor Phase 3 WTP.
The shutdown had affected 1,337 areas in the eight regions, namely Petaling (370 areas), Kuala Selangor (280), Gombak (279), Klang/Shah Alam (189), Kuala Lumpur (186), Hulu Selangor (30), and Kuala Langat (3).
It was reported last night that the four WTPs were shut down after odour pollution was detected at the Rantau Panjang WTP.
“Following the return to normal operations at the four WTPs, clean and safe treated water supply has been distributed in stages to consumers, since 6.30am today,” Air Selangor said.
“The duration of the water supply recovery in the affected areas will vary depending on the distance and location of the consumers’ premises.”
The utility company added that it had mobilised assistance in the form of water tankers to affected areas, with priority given to critical premises, such as hospitals, clinics, and dialysis centres, during the unscheduled water supply disruption.
Meanwhile, state executive councillor Hee Loy Sian said the odour pollution was caused by a fuel spill, believed to be diesel from heavy machinery.
He said an investigation by the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) along Sungai Selangor found the oil spill at the river bank 3km from the Rantau Panjang LRA intake.
“LUAS took immediate action by placing oil booms and pads at the location. It installed bunds at the riverbank to prevent the oil from seeping into the river.
“In the meantime, the owner of the heavy machinery removed the equipment and carried out cleaning work as instructed by LUAS,” he said in a statement today.
Hee said the temporary shutdown of the LRAs intake points for around four hours was a preventive measure to avoid further pollution of the water treatment system.
“The problem was quickly addressed with the channelling of raw water starting at 10pm yesterday and lowering the barrage gates at the LRA intake.”
