In a statement, Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal stood by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, and expressed “its commitment to support the decisions taken by the Cabinet, including the government’s stand to repeal the emergency ordinances”.
“We have always taken a firm stand to defend the institution of the constitutional monarchy and have always upheld the supremacy of the constitution and the rule of law,” he said in a statement.
Wan Fayhsal said he was confident the government had the support of more than 110 MPs needed to form a parliamentary majority.
This, he said, would guarantee the stability needed to battle both the economic and health crises and ensure the success of the vaccination drive.
He expressed gratitude to the Perikatan Nasional, Barisan Nasional, GPS and PBS MPs and independents who had lent the ruling coalition and the prime minister their support.
“We call on all parties to remain focused and united for the benefit of all Malaysians,” he said.
The repeal of the emergency ordinances sparked fierce debate among political observers and the public when it was announced in Parliament on Monday by law minister Takiyuddin Hassan.
It intensified yesterday when Istana Negara released a statement saying the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had not given his consent to the revocation.
This led to calls from a slew of Muhyiddin’s opponents, including his predecessor Dr Mahathir Mohamad and opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, for him to resign.
In response, Muhyiddin’s office released a statement of its own, saying the prime minister was confident the government’s actions were carried out in accordance with the law and the Federal Constitution.
The statement has not cooled tensions, with Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan calling it “arrogant” and urging the party’s MPs to distance themselves from Muhyiddin.
