I stand by my decision, says Annuar on ‘free trade areas’ in federal territories

FT Minister Annuar Musa says he remains committed towards helping the many people who are struggling in all federal territories earn a living in these drastic times.

Anyone intending to carry out some business can do so in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan over the next five months.
PETALING JAYA:
Federal Territories Minister Annuar Musa has reaffirmed his decision to declare the federal territories as “free trade areas” from Nov 15, saying he will take full responsibility for the programme.

Annuar said he had received several memorandums from MPs and statements from associations protesting the move, but said now was not the time for negative thinking.

“We should not be greedy by just thinking of ourselves, we need to think of the people.

“I take note of their concerns on congestion, health and regulations, but I want to firmly say that I will not review my decision. This programme will continue as planned.

“I am committed to helping the many people who are struggling in all federal territories, and I want to make it easier for them to find income in such drastic times,” he said at a press conference today.

He said a “free trade area” did not mean sidelining the rules and SOPs, and stressed that all relevant authorities would be instructed to take action on hawkers who litter or cause traffic congestion and any disruption in residential areas.

Annuar assured this was only a temporary measure to allow people who had lost their jobs due to the pandemic to make an honest living.

He added that Putrajaya was in the midst of completing the forms to be filled up online and that three officers under the ministry had been appointed to assist him with the programme daily.

For those who do not have the means to open up their own stalls, Annuar said the ministry was currently working together with other agencies and would try its best to assist them.

On Tuesday, Annuar had announced that all residents of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan would be allowed to conduct their business anywhere within the three federal territories from Nov 15 to April 15.

He said they would be allowed to sell anything, adding, however, this policy was only available to Malaysians.

Traders will be required to contact their relevant local authorities and provide information on their plans and where they will be conducting business, and must follow the written guidelines which will be released soon.
