KUALA LUMPUR: Over 750,000 former students have not repaid their National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans, Higher Education Minister Idris Jusoh said in the Dewan Rakyat today.

In a written reply to Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh (BN-Setiu), who asked how many defaulters had not repaid a single sen, Idris said a total of 753,058 former students have not done so as of Aug 31, resulting in RM5.191 billion debt to the corporation.

“A total of RM18.311 billion was to be collected from the former students.

“However, out of that total number, only RM9.6 billion has been collected,” the minister replied.

Of the remaining, RM8.71 billion, RM5.191 billion is from the 753,058 former students while the other RM3.518 billion is yet to be fully repaid by current borrowers.

Idris also proposed for those who have difficulties repaying the loans to restructure their payment, enabling them to pay off until they are 60 years old.
