Perkasa Information Chief Hassan Basri Muhammad claimed this was necessary as neither government agencies, political parties, nor the Prime Minister’s Department could unite the Muslims.
“Perkasa sees that the disunity and divide among Muslims can only be dealt with by a national institution which has a great deal of authority and which also involves Malays and Islam.
“This institution is the Conference of Rulers,” Hassan said in a statement today.
He said MUIM should consist of the relevant government agencies, main Malay-Muslim political parties and NGOs.
“Its main task should be to identify the main reason for the rift (among Muslims) and how to unite them.”
He also said Perkasa was prepared to submit its proposal to the Conference of Rulers for consideration.
Hassan was responding to a Utusan report citing National Dakwah Council (MDN) Chairman Mahmood Zuhdi Abd Majid as saying that the Malaysian Islamic Dakwah Foundation (Yadim) should re-evaluate its objectives, especially in uniting Muslims.
Zuhdi was also reported as saying that Yadim should get support from political parties, such as Umno and PAS, in line with its founding objectives, but without being tied to certain agendas.
Perkasa, however, questioned the MDN chairman’s focus only on Umno and PAS and the little importance to other Islamic parties and NGOs.
Hassan added that this focus on the two parties was also suspicious.
“If this is the understanding of the MDN chairman, in urging Yadim to reevaluate its foundation, then Perkasa is worried he has a certain agenda.”
