KUALA LUMPUR:
A man died after he was run over by his own car, which rolled backwards at his home in Batang Kali, Hulu Selangor, on Tuesday afternoon, likely after he failed to engage the handbrake.

Hulu Selangor police chief Ibrahim Husin said they received a report on the incident involving the 67-year-old man at 5.30pm.

“A preliminary investigation found that the accident occurred at 5.18pm when the victim parked his vehicle in the garage of his house before going to close the gate.

“The vehicle suddenly rolled backwards and hit the victim, causing him to fall and become trapped underneath it,” he said in a statement tonight.

Ibrahim said the initial investigation found that the man did not appear to have engaged the vehicle’s handbrake, and the driveway was sloping towards the gate.

He said the man was pronounced dead at the scene from severe head injuries and his body was taken to Kuala Kubu Baharu Hospital for a post-mortem.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

In a separate statement, the Selangor fire and rescue department said it sent a team from the Bukit Sentosa station to help remove the man’s body from under the car.
