In a Facebook post, Hadi claimed that Umno’s decision to work with the two Pakatan Harapan (PH) parties had caused it to place less emphasis on championing policies that advance Muslim and Malay interests.
“Umno has been willing to abandon its Islamic and Malay principles by working with liberal parties such as PKR and extremely secular parties such as DAP in exchange for (government) posts,” he said.
Hadi also accused Umno leaders of remaining silent on alleged government misconduct in a bid to protect their posts.
Barisan Nasional, with Umno as its linchpin, joined forces with PH to form a unity government after the 15th general election.
The Marang MP went on to claim that Umno had snubbed an offer by PAS to work together after the last nationwide polls, despite both parties having joined forces in the past on Muslim-Malay issues.
In 2019, PAS and Umno established Muafakat Nasional (MN), a political pact to consolidate the Malay-Muslim vote.
However, PAS decided to work with Bersatu to form Perikatan Nasional following the fall of the PH government and the appointment of Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister in 2020, which Umno viewed as a betrayal.
PAS also insisted on roping Bersatu into MN, which Umno opposed. The pact ended in December 2022, with Umno going on to back PKR president Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister.
Hadi also alleged that Umno rejected the offer to work with PAS out of fear of being rejected.
Hadi, however, dismissed the notion that Umno would become irrelevant if it joined forces with PAS, noting that the two parties championed a similar cause, despite adopting a different approach.
Hadi called for all Muslim parties to unite, claiming that Umno’s decision to allow “smaller parties” to join BN had weakened the political power of Muslims.
