KUALA LUMPUR:
Authorities have crippled an online child sexual exploitation ring with the seizure of close to a million digital child sexual abuse material files, the nation’s top cop said.

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail said the 888,000 digital files seized in a recent raid conducted jointly with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission was an increase from the 40,000 seized during a sting in December.

Police also arrested 31 suspects, all males, with the youngest aged 12 and the oldest 71.

“Of those nabbed, 25 were the main suspects,” Khalid said at a press conference here today.

He said the suspects comprised students, including those from higher learning institutions, teachers, engineers, graphic designers, and unemployed individuals.

According to Khalid, some of the suspects used social media platforms such as Telegram, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr to download and share CSAM materials.

“Some of them also acted as Telegram group administrators, offering paid access to child sexual abuse material through e-wallet transactions and banking QR codes such as Touch ’n Go.

“The presence of commercial elements shows that this crime has become more structured and profit-driven,” he said.

Khalid also revealed the involvement of youths aged 17 to 21, including a student who made RM76,000 in nine months.

A total of 82 digital devices, including computers, mobile phones, modems, and storage drives, were seized during the operation.

So far, 29 investigation papers have been opened under various legal provisions. Of the 31 suspects, 17 have been charged in court, while 14 have been released on police bail.
