PETALING JAYA:
The Attorney-General’s Chambers has called on the public to stop uploading and circulating unverified information related to the death of Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir.

It said such material included pictures of children who have been linked to Zara.

“The sharing of unverified information and pictures of the children, which are linked to the probe, on social media will cause confusion.

“It will also impact the investigation,” it said in a statement.

Earlier today, the AGC said it returned the preliminary investigation report by the police on the teenager’s death to the authorities to complete their probe.

Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar said they had issued specific instructions to the police, which meant there were a few things that needed to be complied with.

Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after she allegedly fell from the third floor of her school’s hostel in Papar, Sabah.

She died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu the following day.

Sabah police commissioner Jauteh Dikun had said Bukit Aman was reviewing the case and police had not ruled out the possibility that she had been bullied.

Separately, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail said those spreading false information on the case, as well as pictures of Zara, could face action under the law.

This included Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for improper use of network facilities, and Section 15 of the Child Act for revealing the particulars of a child linked to a criminal act.

Khalid also said every step of the police probe into the case had gone according to procedure, including the post-mortem conducted on the deceased.
