Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he and his wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, prayed that Mahathir would continue to enjoy wellness, peace and health.
“Your healthy lifestyle and unceasing service sets an example for our nation which is ageing yet still holds great hope.
“May God continue to bless Tun,” the PKR president and Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman said in a Facebook post.
Agriculture and food security minister Mohamad Sabu also wished the former PH chairman on his 100th birthday, describing him as a key figure in Malaysia’s development and political history.
Mohamad, the president of Amanah, also hailed Mahathir for consistently speaking out on the plight of the Palestinians and condemning the actions of the Zionist regime.
“A hundred years is an extraordinary period of time. It signifies a steadfastness in principles and an extraordinary dedication to the nation,” he said in a Facebook post.
Youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh of DAP meanwhile said: “Happy 100th birthday Tun Dr Mahathir!”
Mahathir led the Barisan Nasional (BN) government from 1981 to 2003 and held the top post again from May 2018 to February 2020 under the PH administration, after helping to topple BN from power.
He is known as Malaysia’s “Father of Modernisation” for the initiatives he carried out as fourth prime minister, including iconic infrastructure projects like the Petronas Twin Towers, KL Tower, KLIA, and Putrajaya as the nation’s administrative hub.
He has been openly critical of Anwar, his former deputy prime minister, as well as PH and Umno, a key component in the unity government.
