PETALING JAYA:
Bersih has called on the government to table a constitutional amendment bill to limit the prime minister’s tenure to 10 years or two terms in the coming meeting of Parliament.

Bersih chief Faisal Abdul Aziz believes that the government would easily get the two-thirds majority needed for the bill, citing the smooth passage of the Parliamentary Service Bill, which received bipartisan support earlier this month.

“We hope that this agenda would be supported by the opposition MPs for a better future,” Faisal said in a posting on X today.

He said other states should also consider limiting the terms of their menteris besar and chief ministers. So far, only Penang has enacted such a provision.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim agreed with DAP’s proposal to limit the prime ministership to 10 years or two terms. However, he said he would hold talks with other coalition government parties on the matter first.

Anwar quipped that he “would not even last 10 years” in the top post as he was “already exhausted” after just two years as prime minister.

Separately, PKR Youth chief Adam Adli said a term limit for the prime minister’s post was a good proposal as it would curb abuse of power and ensure the nation had fresh leadership every decade.
