Anwar said the Cabinet was open to criticism and would take steps to address them, Bernama reported.
At a press conference after the Cabinet retreat in Bangi, Selangor, today, Anwar said every minister was handed reports and assessments of their performance prepared by academics and civil servants.
“We then allowed the ministers to share their views on their commitment and determination to improve their performance.
“I am not saying everything is perfect, but the Cabinet’s performance has been commendable. They have taken the criticism seriously and are implementing the necessary measures for improvement,” he said.
At the retreat, the Cabinet also discussed the need to reassess its approach to mitigating the effects of inflation on the public.
While the latest statistics show that the nation has been progressing positively in this area, Anwar said, Putrajaya must still address ongoing issues like the rising prices of goods.
“Even though the statistics show that our inflation rate is low, people are still complaining about rising prices, particularly those of essential goods.
“This is a challenge we are focusing on because we understand that figures on economic growth, increased investment, security, and tourism will only hold real value if we can control the rising cost of living that burdens parts of our society,” he said.
Govt will intensify efforts to wipe out hardcore poverty
Anwar said his administration will intensify efforts to eradicate hardcore poverty nationwide, and urged the private sector, NGOs and the public to help the government in this endeavour.
He said these efforts went beyond mere temporary aid, and involved ensuring that each family was equipped with the means to become self-reliant and ultimately improve their standard of living.
“Poverty is not merely an economic issue but also a matter of dignity and social justice. That is why, from the very beginning, I have emphasised that the government will not stand idly while the people continue to be burdened by poverty.
“With comprehensive policies and targeted assistance programmes, as well as integrated grassroots efforts, the government will continue to ensure that those in genuine need are helped and given opportunities to escape poverty,” he said.
