PETALING JAYA:
Putrajaya police denied claims it had arrested two leaders from human rights group Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) earlier today.

“They were only brought in to have their statements recorded. No arrests were made,” Putrajaya police chief Aidi Sham Mohamed said in a text message.

Aidi also said police are probing the case under the Protected Areas and Protected Places Act 1959.

Earlier today, Suaram claimed that Putrajaya police arrested the NGO’s executive director Sevan Doraisamy and coordinator Azura Nasron.

In a statement, the group said the duo were being probed over their alleged illegal entry into the home ministry’s complex earlier this week.

Suaram said police initially informed the duo they were to be issued a notice to have their statements recorded. However, Suaram alleged, Sevan and Azura were then served with an arrest warrant.

Both Sevan and Azura are said to have since been released.

On Monday, Sevan had accompanied several family members of Sosma detainees, who had gathered outside the home ministry’s building in Putrajaya, to push for a meeting with officials and hand over a memorandum.

And while they were able to get past the entrance to the ministry’s complex, they were then forced to wait outside its main building as they were prevented by Rela personnel from going any further.

Separately, the home ministry denied that any arrests were made in connection with the submission of the memorandum.

“We emphasise that the individuals (activists) were only called in to provide statements following a police report filed as part of standard security procedures, in accordance with the Protected Areas and Protected Places Act,” it said in a statement.

It explained that the filing of the report is a routine measure whenever there is a breach of security protocols governing entry into the ministry’s building complex.
