Transport minister Loke Siew Fook said some 500,000 passengers – a 10% increase from the number of commuters last year – are expected to use the service during this period, peaking on Feb 11.
He also said that additional KTM Komuter services would operate around the clock for four days from Feb 9 to 12, in view of the demand from commuters, especially Hindus, tourists, and members of the public who want to observe the celebration in Batu Caves.
Loke added that Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, via RapidKL, would be offering free shuttle services from the Pasar Seni hub, Gombak LRT, and Kg Baru MRT to Batu Caves at 10-minute intervals on Feb 10 and 11.
For commuters in Penang, RapidPenang will provide 12 buses at 20- and 60-minute intervals from the jetty to Penang Adventist Hospital.
The Penang Port Commission and Penang Port Sdn Bhd meanwhile will offer free services for 24 hours from Feb 10 to 11, with services extended until 2.30am on Feb 12.
“This initiative is aimed at reducing traffic congestion and encouraging commuters to use public transport,” Loke said.
In Johor, he said BAS.MY would offer additional rides for free around Johor Bahru, Seremban, and Ipoh to shuttle devotees to the nearest temples.
“I hope the public who intend to use public transport for Thaipusam will plan their trips,” he said.
