PUTRAJAYA:
Local traders, entrepreneurs and tourism players will benefit from the more than 350 Asean meetings which the country is scheduled to host as the chair of the regional bloc this year.

Foreign ministry secretary-general Amran Zin said the nationwide Asean meetings were poised to boost local communities through business opportunities, job creation and trade prospects.

The meetings, which kick off in Langkawi this weekend, will feature local traders showcasing products such as Malaysian food and craft as part of a broader “buy local” campaign designed to leave a lasting impression on visiting dignitaries while directly benefitting local entrepreneurs.

“Asean is not just a high-level concept – it is practical and achievable. It must be relevant and beneficial to the people,” Amran said at a media briefing here.

“Our focus is on bringing Asean closer to the people, enabling them to understand its significance and derive tangible benefits through engagements and business opportunities.”

Malaysia’s preparation for Asean 2025 includes contributions from government agencies, government-linked companies, local authorities and the private sector.

In addition, a total of 29 different community engagement programmes involving students, youths, women and the disabled will also be held.

“This is our chance to showcase not just our nation’s achievements but also the spirit of our people and their hospitality,” said Amran.

Amran also touched on Proton’s electric vehicle, the Proton e.MAS 7, which would be used to transport leaders, ministers and senior officials during the Asean meetings.

He said the use of the EVs would showcase Malaysia’s commitment to sustainability and innovation at the regional stage.

Amran said Malaysia planned to leverage its chairmanship of Asean to promote trade, investment, tourism, education, green initiatives and e-commerce among Asean countries.

He said with a population of 670 million and a combined GDP of US$3.7 trillion, Asean was a major economic player and an emerging powerhouse.

Established in 1967, it has evolved into a formidable regional bloc, driving growth and integration among its members.

“Today, it is recognised internationally as a key player in global geopolitics and economics,” said Amran.
