Yadzil said there have been multiple incidents of flooding in several parts of Melaka this year, damaging properties, resulting in significant financial losses, and disrupting the Visit Melaka 2024 campaign.
He said while it is common knowledge that the country is entering the monsoon season and experiencing extreme weather conditions, the state government did not seem to have specific plans to manage floods.
“It is highly unlikely that the state lacks funds to improve the drainage system. It is inconsistent to announce multi-million ringgit investments flowing into Melaka while failing to address flooding issues,” he said in a statement.
“Why does it seem like government agencies are becoming less effective in addressing such issues? Have adequate allocations been provided to resolve this never-ending problem?”
Last Saturday, deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said seven flood mitigation projects are being carried out in Melaka at a total cost of about RM1 billion.
Fadillah, who is also the energy transition and water transformation minister, was in Alor Gajah to witness the handover of completed projects by the department of irrigation and drainage to the state government at the Alor Gajah municipal council.
These completed projects, with a total allocation of RM28.6 million, include the river mouth conservation projects at Sungai Baru and Sungai Punggor, the Telok Gong coastal erosion prevention project, and telemetry hydrology stations for Phase 2 of the national flood forecasting and warning programme.
