
He told the Dewan Rakyat that his constituents are now forced to travel outside the district, and sometimes to other states, to seek medical care due to overcrowding in nearby hospitals.

“The situation not only makes access to urgent treatment difficult, but also burdens hospitals in other districts that are already overcrowded. A new hospital should be built in the constituency for the benefit of local residents,” he said during the debate on the 2025 budget estimates.
Taufiq suggested increasing the capacity and staff at health clinics to provide the people with quicker treatment in a cost-effective manner without overwhelming the larger general hospitals.
Last year, a 51-year-old roti canai seller was reported to have died at the emergency ward of Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital, allegedly after waiting for hours to be treated. The health ministry subsequently announced it was investigating the matter.
Action on bullying
Taufiq also called for action on bullying, particularly among young doctors and housemen. He urged the government to provide funds for stronger mental health and social support policies for healthcare staff.
He also called for stricter monitoring to prevent harassment and bullying.
Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital, the main general hospital in Sungai Petani, has 668 general beds and 28 ICU beds.
Health ministry data shows Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital is operating at high capacity, with 87.3% of general beds in use and 67.9% of ICU beds occupied. Figures for other Kedah hospitals are: Kulim – 97.4% general beds, 83.3% ICU beds; Pendang 84.7% general beds, 50% ICU beds; Alor Setar 72.8% general beds and 83.3% ICU beds.
