In a statement, PKR Youth said public interest and justice for the Malaysian people cannot be compromised.
“An apology alone will not recover the losses suffered by Malaysians. Citizens are forced to bear the impact of this disgraceful scandal that cannot simply be brushed aside.
“We demand that the government and authorities ensure firm action is taken and that all involved in this scandal are brought to court, regardless of their status or position.”
It also said that ensuring transparency and integrity in public administration is essential to restore public trust in government institutions.
“The 1MDB scandal has not only tarnished the country’s reputation but has also inflicted significant economic damage and affected the lives of the people. Malaysians deserve to see justice upheld and the nation’s dignity restored,” it added.
On Friday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is also prime minister, said he welcomed Najib’s apology over the 1MDB scandal. Today, Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg said the same.
Najib is currently serving a reduced six-year sentence following a pardon after he was convicted of misappropriating RM42 million in funds belonging to former 1MDB subsidiary SRC International.
On Thursday, he said he had reflected on the 1MDB fiasco over the past 26 months, and it pained him that it happened when he was the prime minister and finance minister.
In a statement read out by his son Nizar at a press conference, Najib said he would like to “apologise unreservedly” over the 1MDB debacle.
Najib also denied being the mastermind or collaborating with fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, in the scheme.
His apology comes ahead of Wednesday’s High Court decision whether he is to enter his defence in a 1MDB corruption case that started five years ago.
