PETALING JAYA:
Two aerotrains are being installed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as part of the aerotrain replacement project, said transport minister Loke Siew Fook.

He said the aerotrains were received last week, and it will take four to five months to complete all the tests needed. The aerotrains are on track to be operational by Jan 31.

Loke, who inspected the aerotrains today, said Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) will receive three aerotrains in total, with each aerotrain having three coaches that can accommodate 270 passengers.

“The third aerotrain will arrive in October and be used as a ‘backup train’,” he said in a press conference at KLIA.

“These aerotrains are MAHB’s assets, so they (MAHB) have to ensure that they are maintained well.”

He said each aerotrain has a lifespan of 30 years, which is standard for such trains.

The aerotrain will connect the main terminal and the satellite terminal at KLIA.

In March 2022, MAHB announced that it was awarded the KLIA aerotrain replacement project, scheduled for a three-year completion timeline.

However, the project encountered delays, which resulted in a new project award in January 2024 to a consortium comprising Alstom, the aerotrain’s original equipment manufacturer, and a joint venture consisting of IJM Construction Sdn Bhd and Pestech Technology Sdn Bhd (IJMC-Pestech JV).
