Transport minister Loke Siew Fook said only 2.68% of 108,805 heavy vehicles were confirmed as having speed limiter devices installed as of yesterday, slamming operators for taking the new requirement lightly.
“One association wrote in to say there aren’t enough places to check (and confirm the installation of the devices) or that they don’t have enough time. Those are common excuses.
“Fewer than 3,000 heavy vehicles have been verified (as having speed limiters). They’re taking a wait-and-see approach,” he said at a press conference here.
Loke said the road transport department (JPJ) would not compromise once the new rule takes effect next month, with enforcement action to be taken.
The new rule was announced in June following a spate of fatal road accidents involving heavy vehicles.
Installations must be verified by JPJ-recognised centres, with paperwork issued as confirmation. These papers must be furnished for the renewal of operating permits.
Verification of the speed limiters must also be conducted every two years.
