Earlier, a source told FMT that several Bersatu associate wing leaders had disagreed with Mourhrna’s appointment, which was allegedly not approved by state leaders and those from the associate wing.
The source said Mourhrna, who previously served as the wing’s women’s chief, lacked grassroots support as she only joined the wing a few months ago.
The source also claimed that Mourhrna’s appointment had resulted in strife within the wing, with many members calling for Chong to step down.
Denying there was internal turmoil arising from the matter, Chong said Mourhrna’s selection was approved by the party’s top leaders and was made to fill an existing vacancy.
“An Indian was chosen to balance the positions within the allied wing among Indian and Chinese representatives,” he told FMT, adding that Mourhrna’s appointment had not been officially announced.
“The appointment is only for a few months. Those unhappy with it can choose new leaders at Bersatu’s elections in September.”
Chong said the wing’s office bearers were evaluated based on their performances and would be replaced if they failed to deliver.
