PETALING JAYA:
A misunderstanding between a cashier and an affronted customer led to a claim that a FamilyMart convenience store at a Caltex petrol station had separate payment counters for Muslims and non-Muslims, according to a Sin Chew Daily report.

A shop assistant said that the customer had been told to pay at another counter because the shop was balancing its daily sales, the report said.

A video clip making the allegation about the store in Bukit Mertajam has been going viral on social media since yesterday, with netizens condemning the purported action as dividing the nation further.

The shop assistant said the incident happened last week and the video had then surfaced. It is understood that FamilyMart’s management is aware of the video.

The Sin Chew report said three counters were operating at the FamilyMart shop and no “racial labels” were displayed.

It was also reported that the viral video had gained the attention of two Chinese customers who went to the convenience store to investigate the matter. Both found that there were no racially segregated counters at the shop.
