“This matter is yet to be discussed in the Cabinet,” he said when asked by reporters at the Malaysia Madani Raya Aidilfitri Open House at Hotel Raia here.
Azam’s tenure ends on May 12. He was appointed on March 9, 2020, following the resignation of his predecessor Latheefa Koya.
He has been embroiled in controversy since taking up the post.
Several Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders claimed in the past that MACC had allegedly been abused by previous governments to go after then opposition politicians.
Such claims increased during Azam’s tenure as some PH MPs were allegedly targeted for the purpose of forcing them to support the Perikatan Nasional-led government under then prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
Last year, Azam was in hot water after allegations were made over his ownership of shares and warrants.
He denied any wrongdoing but several watchdog groups and PH leaders called for an investigation to be opened into the matter.
Azam was also reported to have been queried by three different MACC committees over the matter.
However, then law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the issue was resolved after the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) decided that there was no case.
In the Dewan Rakyat last month, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim defended his decision not to replace Azam, saying he wanted to break the convention that a change of guard in the agency was necessary whenever a new prime minister is appointed.
He said his decision was also influenced by MACC’s status as an independent body.
