
PETALING JAYA: A former deputy director of a government department in Penang was arrested for allegedly receiving RM35,000 in bribes from a contractor in return for awarding a project.
According to a source, the man, in his 50s, was arrested at about 10am today after giving his statement at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office in George Town.
“An initial investigation found that the suspect is believed to have committed the offence in 2022,” the source said.
“He is suspected of having received the bribe money through bank transfers into his personal account as well as in cash.”
Penang MACC director S Karunanithy confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated for accepting bribes under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009.
The suspect was released on MACC bail.
