PETALING JAYA:
Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Yunos has denied bribing 12 party delegates to get them to vote for him during the party’s March 18 elections.

Jamal claimed the allegation was made by his opponent who had lost in the division-level polls. However, he did not name the person.

He also confirmed that he had been summoned by the Umno disciplinary board. “I will explain the matter to them,” he told FMT, adding that he will hold a press conference after that.

Jamal had defended his Sungai Besar Umno chief post last month, defeating former Selangor menteri besar Khir Toyo.

Utusan Malaysia reported that Jamal was issued a letter by Umno disciplinary board chairman Hafarizam Harun on Friday, which stated that he had violated the party’s constitution and membership rules.

In the letter, Hafarizam said Jamal had, at about 6.15pm on March 17, given a bribe of RM1,000 each to 12 delegates from the Parit Sungai Haji Dorani, Parit 3 Jalan Lama, Sungai Limau, Simpang Tiga Loji and Pekan Pasir Panjang branches.

He said the bribes were given, through an agent of Jamal’s, so that the delegates would vote for him as the Sungai Besar Umno chief for the 2023-2026 term.

Hafarizam said that besides cash, the delegates were given goodie bags consisting of merchandise as well as a redeemable card which would entitle them to RM2,000 each should Jamal win the elections.
