PETALING JAYA:
The director of “Mentega Terbang” has received death threats over his controversial movie which touches on the differences and similarities of the country’s major religions.

A Malaysiakini report said that among the messages left at Khairi Anwar’s house in Selangor were “You and your family must die” and “Do you think your family is safe, Mentega Terbang?”.

The report said Khairi’s car was also splashed with black and red paint.

Other notes found in Khairi’s residence include “Islam will rise up!”, “Mentega Terbang, don’t challenge Islam”, and “You’re so arrogant, Mentega Terbang.”

In his police report sighted by Malaysiakini, the 31-year-old director said actor Arjun Thanaraju’s car parked at his residence in Ampang was also splashed with red paint and acid.

Kajang district police chief Zaid Hassan confirmed Khairi had lodged a report this morning.

Police yesterday recorded statements from a producer and six actors involved in the movie, which has been available online since 2021. Khairi and Arjun had their statements taken last Friday.

Religious affairs minister Na’im Mokhtar said the Islamic development department (Jakim) had reviewed the film’s content and found that it contradicted with Islamic beliefs and the Muslim way of life in the country.
