PETALING JAYA:
Barisan Nasional (BN) has made an about-turn on the Sabah chief minister’s post, announcing its support for the incumbent, Hajiji Noor.

Previously, Sabah BN chief Bung Moktar Radin announced the coalition was withdrawing its support for Hajiji as part of a bid to oust the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman from office.

However, Bung’s attempt, which was supported by Warisan, Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM), and an independent assemblyman, failed after Hajiji proved he had the support of the majority of the assemblymen in the state.

BN secretary-general Zambry Abd Kadir said Karambunai assemblyman Yakub Khan had been appointed to represent the coalition in talks with the state unity government.

Yakub is also Sabah Umno deputy chief.

“Sabah BN has been given the task of ensuring the agenda of the unity government is carried out successfully,” Zambry added.

After Bung’s failed attempt to remove Hajiji last month, the former was removed as deputy chief minister as part of the state Cabinet reshuffle.

Bung was replaced by Tanjung Keramat assemblyman Shahelmey Yahya.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had said he supported efforts to create a Sabah unity government, adding that this must be done to stabilise the political situation in Sabah before the upcoming state elections in six states in the peninsula.

“I reckon that the unity government model used for Putrajaya should be modified in Sabah, according to its political landscape,” Zahid said.
