Step down as Umno president, Tajuddin tells Zahid

The Pasir Salak MP claims that he is a 'living witness' of how Umno MPs had signed SDs last year backing Anwar Ibrahim for prime minister.

Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said Umno needs a president ‘who is clean’.
PETALING JAYA:
Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, who was recently removed as an Umno Supreme Council member, has called on Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to step down as the party’s president.

The Pasir Salak MP also accused Zahid of making decisions for the party unilaterally, saying members of the Supreme Council, the highest decision-making body in Umno, simply went along with the Bagan Datuk MP’s decisions.

“The Supreme Council is the party’s highest decision-making body. Here, policies are made to defend the people and strengthen the party,” he said at a press conference.

“However, we haven’t been making decisions on economic issues. There is no serious discussion on how to help the Malays economically,” he said, adding the Supreme Council meetings were just for show.

“For the sake of the party, Zahid, please step down and let go of the party’s presidency,” he said.

Tajuddin also claimed he was a “living witness” to Zahid’s efforts to get Umno MPs to sign statutory declarations (SDs) backing opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister.

He said he did not want to sign the SD at first, but was “forced” to. He also said Zahid signed the SD in support of Anwar.

Tajuddin said he was not afraid of being sacked by the party for speaking out, quipping that it would not be his first time.

Asked who should replace Zahid as Umno president, Tajuddin said Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, an Umno vice-president, is the best candidate for the post.

“There is a lot of grassroots support for Ismail to become (the next) Umno president. We want a president who is clean,” he said.

Previously, Zahid said Tajuddin had been dropped from the Supreme Council as he had been critical of the party.
