UUM lifts gag order on Vinosiny’s case

Students were previously banned from speaking publicly, organising or attending events about S Vinosiny’s death.

Universiti Utara Malaysia advised students to always be ‘prudent’ in their actions as S Vinosiny’s case is still under investigation.
PETALING JAYA:
Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) has lifted a gag order and says it will not prevent students from engaging in any activity that shows solidarity with S Vinosiny, who is suspected to have been electrocuted in a hostel room.

In a statement, the university, however, advised students to always be “prudent” in their actions as the case is still under investigation.

UUM imposed a gag order on May 27 where it advised students to remain calm and banned them from speaking publicly, organising or attending events about Vinosiny’s death.

The order was aimed at forums and vigils being organised by students to honour Vinosiny and to demand justice.

In that same statement, UUM warned students that action would be taken against them if they went against the university’s instructions.

On May 24, the police confirmed receiving a report on the death of the 21-year-old student. The case has been classified as sudden death for now, according to a report by Harian Metro.

Initial investigations found that the student was believed to have had a seizure, but the police were still waiting for the chemist’s report.
