Number of flood evacuees drops to 28,000

They are being sheltered in 183 relief centres in Kelantan, Selangor, Pahang, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan.

KUALA LUMPUR:
A total of 28,005 flood evacuees from 8,598 families are still seeking shelter at relief centres in five states as of this morning.

According to the social welfare department’s Info Bencana portal, all the evacuees are at 183 relief centres in Kelantan, Selangor, Pahang, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan.

In Selangor, the number of victims has decreased to 11,864 at 61 relief centres compared with 15,354 at 81 centres last night.

Meanwhile, Selangor fire and rescue department director Norazam Khamis has advised the public not to burn their flood waste.

He said the department received a call to put out a fire fuelled by flood waste at 5.50pm, adding that two such cases had been recorded around Kapar, Klang.

In Pahang, 16,579 victims are being sheltered at 119 centres. The districts still affected by the floods are Bentong, Temerloh, Bera, Maran, Kuantan and Pekan.

The Info Bencana site said the water levels at Sungai Pahang in Lubuk Paku, Maran and Sungai Bera in Bera have dropped to warning levels and are showing a downward trend.

The Malaysian meteorological department has predicted rain in several places in Kuantan and Pekan, while the weather in other districts is expected to be favourable this morning.

In Kelantan, the number of evacuees dropped to 378 from 127 families compared to 470 people from 153 families last night.

The department of drainage and irrigation reported that no major rivers in Kelantan are at danger levels, with only one river – Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas – at the warning level

In Melaka, the number of victims remains at 26 from eight families. State civil defence director Cuthbert John Martin Quadra said only one relief centre is operating, at SK Penghulu Benteng in Jasin.

In Negeri Sembilan, state civil defence director Mohd Syukri Madnor said the number of victims dropped slightly to 128 from 37 families, compared to 132 from 38 families last night, and they are being housed at three relief centres in Jelebu.
