Revoked ordinances a testament to Umno’s pressure, says Azalina

Supreme council member points out that party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had just yesterday instructed the party’s MPs to push for an end to emergency and ordinances.

Azalina Othman Said, the Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker, said continuous pressure from Umno has worked.
PETALING JAYA:
The revocation of the emergency ordinances and the decision not to extend the state of emergency are testament to the pressure Umno has exerted on the government, supreme council member Azalina Othman Said has said.

This comes after law minister Takiyuddin Hassan made the two announcements at a special parliamentary sitting today.

The Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker pointed to a press statement released yesterday from Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, in which he said all party MPs must push for the cancellation of the state of emergency and the emergency ordinances.

“In this regard, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Umno president and leadership, who have continuously upheld the command of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” she said in a statement.

“I am confident that the continuous pressure from Umno, like this, has brought results, with the federal government bowing to the pressure.”

During today’s special parliament session, Takiyuddin said all the emergency ordinances (EOs) have been revoked as of July 21 because the government decided to cancel them under Article 153 of the Federal Constitution.

Takiyuddin also told the Dewan Rakyat that the government has decided it would not advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to extend the state of emergency, which ends on Aug 1

He also said the annulment of the EOs means they are no longer relevant.
