KOTA KINABALU:
It is time for the federal government to allow walk-in vaccinations in Sabah as many residents in rural areas do not have internet access, said deputy chief minister Bung Moktar Radin.

“I urge the authorities concerned to undertake other initiatives, seeing that the MySejahtera approach has not been effective,” Bung, who is state Umno chief, said when met here today.

“The walk-in approach must be considered for Sabahans who have yet to receive their appointments, particularly those in remote locations who do not have internet access. This is to ensure Sabah can achieve herd immunity within the specified target time.”

Bung also called on the federal government, in particular the Covid-19 vaccine supply access guarantee special committee (JKJAV), to expedite the supply of vaccines to Sabah.

He said data from JKJAV showed the number of recipients of the first and second vaccine shots in Sabah was extremely low compared with other states in the country.

He added that speedy supply of vaccines was even more pressing now with the drastic increase in new infections over the past few weeks.

“The state government has taken various approaches such as opening up more vaccination centres (PPVs) as well as outreach programmes (to rural areas) but the targeted vaccination rate can’t be achieved because the supply is just not enough.

“This matter cannot be delayed any further because we are facing new variants of concern which are more contagious,” Bung said.
