PETALING JAYA:
A deal has been struck in principle for the establishment of a reciprocal “green lane” between Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam, which would allow for essential business and official travel between the two countries.

In a joint statement regarding the meeting between the Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin at the 23rd Malaysia-Brunei Darussalam Annual Leaders’ Consultation, the two leaders said officials from both sides will begin discussions to draft standard operating procedures for the proposal.

The two also discussed potential vaccine diplomacy between the Southeast Asian neighbours which would centre on three core facets.

“(These) include a reciprocal vaccination arrangement for both nationals covering diplomats, students and expatriates; ensuring access to vaccine supplies for both Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia; and a reciprocal mutual recognition of vaccination certificates between both nations.”

“This step would facilitate cross-border movement of the people between both countries.”

Days ago, it was announced that a similar arrangement was reached during foreign minister Hishammuddin Hussein’s trip to China, whereby both countries agreed to recognise each other’s Covid-19 vaccination certificates.

Malaysia and China also agreed to finalise their negotiations for the establishment of a reciprocal “green lane” between both nations.

Meanwhile, Brunei and Malaysia also reaffirmed the commitment of their respective nations to work together in managing other challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Both leaders also expressed their appreciation with the collaboration between the two governments, particularly in managing the repatriation of their respective citizens stranded in each other’s country and other countries during the Covid-19 pandemic. This is a testament to the close and enduring ties between the two countries and their peoples.”
