Pensioners from GLCs look for relief in 2021 budget

They had worked in government agencies that were privatised in the early 1980s and 1990s.

Some of the 100,000 pensioners, including those from GLCs like Keretapi Tanah Melayu, get less than RM180 a month.
KUALA LUMPUR:
The Union Network International-Malaysia Labor Center (UNI-MLC) wants a review of the pension for pensioners from government-linked companies (GLCs).

Its president, Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal, said this involved pensioners who had previously worked in Telekom Malaysia Berhad, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Keretapi Tanah Melayu, Pos Malaysia Berhad, Northport, PLUS, Malaysia Airports and other agencies.

These agencies were privatised in the early 1980s and 1990s.

Shafie said the government should study how it could help them by including them in Budget 2021.

“The low pension payment has created social and economic problems. There are pensioners, in service of 25 years, receiving a pension as low as RM180 a month,” he said in a statement today.

Shafie said more than 100,000 retirees from the GLCs had expected good news on the matter in the budget.

UNI-MLC had sent 10 memoranda in the last 20 years hoping for some relief, he added.
