Sabah detainee found positive for Covid-19, police lock-up disinfected

KOTA KINABALU:
A foreigner arrested for illegal gambling and immigration offences has been found positive for Covid-19 in Penampang near here.

The 26-year-old man was detained along with another suspect in an anti-gambling raid at Plaza Kivatu in the district on June 10.

Penampang police chief Mohd Haris Ibrahim said the duo had been made to undergo a swab test following their arrests that day.

The test results came back yesterday and one of the men was found to have the virus while the other tested negative.

“The man was subsequently sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

“The health ministry also moved quickly into action by sending a team to assess other detainees at the lock-up,” he said when contacted today.

Haris said besides the detainees, several other policemen who had close contacts with the man, were also tested.

“This is the first positive Covid-19 case involving a detainee in our lock-up in Penampang.”

He said the health authorities carried out disinfection work in the lock-up following the discovery.
