TV3 to say sorry to Anwar tonight

It's part of the settlement of a suit by Anwar against the private TV station and Umno-linked Utusan Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno-linked Utusan Malaysia and TV3 today settled a defamation suit filed by Anwar Ibrahim over an allegation that he bribed judges and officials in the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

TV3 has agreed to carry an apology during its Buletin Utama news programme tonight, while Utusan Melayu (M) Bhd, which publishes the Malay daily, would publish the apology on or before Nov 2.

Anwar’s lawyer Sangeet Kaur Deo said Utusan, TV3 and former Barisan Nasional candidate for Permatang Pauh, Mazlan Ismail, would also collectively pay RM130,000 in costs to her client.

The judgment was recorded before judicial commissioner Faizah Jamaludin.

Azhar Arman Ali represented Utusan while Lim Qi Si appeared for TV3.

Mazlan, who stood against Anwar in the 13th general election in 2013, had earlier apologised to the PKR leader in August.

In his suit filed in 2015, Anwar claimed that Mazlan uttered defamatory words during a press conference, which were later published by TV3 on its Buletin Utama news programme on Aug 2, 2013 and in Utusan Malaysia the following day.

The suit came about when Mazlan, whom Anwar defeated in the 2013 general election, claimed to have received letters alleging that Anwar had paid his lawyer, the late Karpal Singh, more than RM50 million since 2008 as legal fees and bribes to judges and prosecutors.

Anwar, then the opposition leader, said the allegation put him in low esteem in the eyes of the public.

Karpal, who was Anwar’s lead counsel in a sexual misconduct case, was killed in a car accident on April 17, 2014.
