KUALA LUMPUR:
De facto law minister VK Liew has defended the Council of Eminent Persons (CEP), saying it was a form of national service, unlike the Performance and Management Delivery Unit (Pemandu).

Liew was responding to Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (PAS-Kubang Kerian) who asked the minister to define the terms of reference and funding for the CEP.

“The CEP should not be compared to the defunct Pemandu, as the members work for free, unlike Pemandu, as a form of national service.

“The CEP was formed on May 12, by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to act on an ‘advisory basis’ on economic, financial and other matters.

“Among others, their terms of reference is to prepare a draft policy to help Pakatan Harapan (PH) achieve its 100-day pledges.

“The CEP will only advise the government for 100 days,” he said in a written reply.

Pemandu formed in 2009 as part of former Prime Minister Najib Razak’s administration, was aimed at improving the government’s efficiency and communicating its policies.

The World Bank had noted that Pemandu had an annual budget of RM40 million.

The PH government disbanded Pemandu’s services in May.

The disbandment was announced along with other government entities such as the National Council of Professors (NPC), the Federal Village Development and Safety Committees (JKKKP) and the Special Affairs Department (Jasa).
