SHAH ALAM:
With just seven days to go before nomination day for the Sabah state election, Amanah remains determined to increase the number of seats it will contest.

Its president, Mohamad Sabu, said Amanah has only announced it will contest in the Sulabayan state seat, but the party is still negotiating with its Pakatan Harapan allies to secure at least one more seat before nomination day on Nov 15.

“So far, Amanah has secured one seat in negotiations. We are working to obtain at least one more.

“We have conveyed this request to PH secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, and he will try to finalise the negotiations by next Saturday,” he told a press conference after officiating the Amanah convention in Shah Alam.

Earlier, Mohamad acknowledged in his speech that negotiating seat allocations within the unity government coalition for the Sabah polls was not an easy process, but it is nearing completion.

He said lthough seat negotiations are often the biggest challenge before an election, every party in the coalition remains committed to the spirit of consensus.

As such, he said, the party is willing to accept any seat offered to them.

“We are open to contesting anywhere assigned to us. So far, we have mentioned Sulabayan. It is indeed a challenging seat, but it is the choice available. When entrusted with the responsibility, we will do our best,” he said.

On Oct 27, Mohamad announced that Amanah would contest the Sulabayan seat, naming activist Julpikar Mijan as the candidate.

Julpikar, who hails from Semporna, is a community leader who has been actively involved in education and community development.

Before the dissolution of the Sabah legislative assembly, the constituency was represented by Warisan’s Jaujan Sambakong.

The Sabah election will be held on Nov 29, with nomination day set for Nov 15, and early voting on Nov 25. There will be 73 seats up for grabs.
