KOTA KINABALU:
Sabah PKR has received numerous applications from former Barisan Nasional members to join the Pakatan Harapan component party but it is in no rush to approve them, says vice-chairman Kenny Chua.

Chua, who is the Inanam assemblyman, said the party was carefully screening the applications and had yet to approve any of them.

He said so far, he only had the applications that were sent through the Inanam state assemblyman’s office as well as the headquarters of Penampang PKR, which he heads.

Chua said he had yet to check on other locations.

“There are hundreds of applications from Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) and even Umno members,” he told FMT.

“Some of these people were holding positions in their parties. But so far we have not accepted any application as we are still monitoring. We have to be careful because we just formed the government.”

Chua, who is also Sabah assistant finance minister, said the party would reject those who were only interested in their political survival.

He said the conditions for those from other parties who wanted to join PKR were that they could only be ordinary members and could not contest any party post for one year.

Chua said there were also some 1,000 applications from individuals who were not members of any party in Inanam and Penampang.

“The response has been very good, especially from ordinary folks (those without parties). It shows they believe in our struggle.”

Prime Minister and PH chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad said on Monday that the coalition would accept Umno members provided they become independents first.

The PM had earlier stated that PH would not accept Umno members.

In response, DAP’s Klang MP Charles Santiago said the people might lose confidence in PH if component parties started accepting former Umno and BN members.

Those who have pulled out from the former ruling coalition in Sabah are PBS, PBRS, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Upko.

Upko is now part of the state new government.

PBRS and LDP are still not aligned with any coalition while PBS has forged an alliance with Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) called Gabungan Bersatu.
