KUALA LUMPUR:
Police are tracking down rapper Namewee following his video clip titled “Like a Dog” which has allegedly offended the feelings and sensitivities of the multiracial community in the country.

Bukit Aman CID director Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, was believed to be outside the country currently.

“We are still tracking him down… He is believed to be abroad.

“Investigations are being carried out together with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC),” he said when contacted by Bernama today.

Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said police had opened up an investigation paper on Namewee with regard to his video clip.

Fuzi said the case was being investigated under Section 298 of the Penal Code (for uttering words et cetera with deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings of any person) and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (for improper use of network facilities).

Last week, Namewee uploaded the video clip in conjunction with the Chinese New Year.

It portrayed a group of people wearing dog masks and allegedly contained vulgar dances near the Perdana Putra Building in Putrajaya, where the prime minister’s office is situated.

On Feb 15, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Namewee “may not be so lucky this time” after he escaped action following an earlier controversial video in 2016 over a scene shot in a mosque.

The home minister also said he was concerned that “lone wolves” or certain organisations may take their own action against the controversial artiste over the latest video.

In a new video posting on Saturday, Namewee defended “Like a Dog”, saying it was made to celebrate the year of the dog this Chinese New Year.

In a 10-minute explanation on YouTube, he denied touching on religious or racial sensitivities in the video.
