He recalled after the Royal Commission of Inquiry on Project IC, the former prime minister openly admitted to being responsible and was even proud to have carried out Project IC.
“Sabahans will also remember Mahathir as the patron of Perkasa and what they have said and done to damage multiracial harmony in Malaysia.”
The science, technology and innovation minister said Mahathir being named the prime ministerial candidate by Pakatan Harapan was a big liability for PH.
It was also a liability for its Warisan allies in Sabah as Sabahans remember well not only Project IC but also the neglect of Sabah and Sarawak under Mahathir previously.
“We certainly do not want to nor can afford a repeat of that.”
The RCI was set up in August 2012 in response to long-standing demands for an investigation into the so-called Projek IC, an alleged scheme in which hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants were said to have been given identity cards on the promise that they would vote for BN.
The RCI began its hearings in January 2013 and presented its report to Prime Minister Najib Razak and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the end of 2014. The report is available on the internet.
Tangau said it was PH’s right to name whoever they wanted as their PM and deputy PM.
“If they want to name a 93-year-old person whom Kit Siang once said was the root cause of all of Malaysia’s problems as the PM candidate, or a person who was once denied the chance to be menteri besar, because she was seen as a remote-controlled MB, then it is not for me to comment since it is their choice.
“I do find it very amusing that prior to GE13, one of the campaign promises of Pakatan was that they promised to bring Mahathir to justice within 24 hours of winning Putrajaya for what they alleged to be his 22 years’ of abuses and corruption.
“And now prior to GE14, Pakatan promises to put back this person into power should they win — the very same person whom they promised to jail in GE13.”
Tangau also mentioned PH’s plan to challenge the decision of the Pardon’s Board not to grant a pardon to Anwar Ibrahim who is now serving time for a sodomy conviction.
“I have no comment on it since Pakatan likes to challenge every court decision or any law. Perhaps they have a lot of money for lawyers?
“Just like how Anwar recently challenged three laws in courts as being unconstitutional.
“These were the very same laws that he and Mahathir were chiefly responsible for implementing in the first place.
“It is mind-boggling.”
