In a statement, R Sivarasa, N Surendran and Latheefa Koya said Dr S Jeyaindran had not given instructions for Anwar to be taken for proper treatment at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL).
They said the accident, which took place as Anwar was returning to the Sungai Buloh Prison after being warded for his erratic blood pressure, had aggravated his current and pre-existing injuries in his right shoulder, neck and lower back.
This had led to continued pain since then, they added.
However, upon his return to the prison, he was only given an injection and painkillers, they said.
“It was only three days later, after suffering from severe pain and discomfort, that DSAI was brought to HKL.”
Adding that the “unnecessary and unexplained delay” may have further aggravated Anwar’s condition, the lawyers said they had written to the home minister as well as the health minister, seeking an explanation for the “inexcusable failure”.
“Proper medical attention is the right of every imprisoned person,” they said.
In the incident which occurred on Sept 22, Sivarasa said the car carrying Anwar had braked sharply to avoid an oncoming vehicle. This had caused another escort car from behind to knock into it.
Anwar is serving a five-year jail term after the Federal Court upheld a conviction on sodomy involving his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.
He was admitted to HKL on Sept 19 due to his erratic blood pressure, as well as to undergo routine physiotherapy for an old shoulder injury.
