Wan Syahrul Naim Wan Junus, 29, pleaded guilty to the two charges.
The youngest of three siblings, he was jailed five years on the first charge of giving support to Daesh.
On the charge of possessing IS-linked materials, he received a two-year prison term.
Judge Azman Abdullah ordered the sentences to run concurrently from the date of arrest on June 29, last year.
In his judgement, he said although the court took into account Wan Naim’s guilty plea and regret, the sentence should reflect the court’s sternness and serve as a lesson to others.
“You are qualified, but you chose to do things which lead to terrorism… If your family members or friends were at the Movida Club (in Puchong), I am sure you would not agree with the action,” he added.
Earlier, Wan Naim’s counsel, Mohamad Zaidan Daud, pleaded for a light sentence in that the factory operator’s admission of guilt had saved cost and time for many parties.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Izhanudin Alias urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence as public interest was more important.
Wan Naim pleaded guilty to supporting IS through the Telegram application on his handphone at Kampung Pondok Cegar in Pendang, Kedah, between March 25 and June 29 last year.
On the second offence, he possessed materials related to terrorist acts and IS, at 11.15pm at the same place and date.
