JOHOR BAHRU:
Eight boys are dead and two are fighting for their lives in hospital after a car slammed into them at 3am this morning beside the Mahmoodiah cemetery here. Four more were hurt.

Six of this group were schoolboys.

Police said they were all part of a group of 30 to 40 teenagers, aged 13 to 17 years, on bicycles and were believed to have been blocking some roads before being mowed down by the car in Jalan Lingkaran Dalam.

“The injured are being treated at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital,” police told reporters at the mortuary here today.

They said a 22-year-old woman, driving from Taman Pelangi, is believed to have ploughed into the group when she failed to brake in time to avoid them.

The driver had minor injuries and was sent to the hospital as she was traumatised. She has been detained to help in investigations.

Police said the driver was apparently not drunk or speeding when the incident occurred.
